Host in Portugal

Check-IN is a Coordinating Organization in Lisbon and will be responsible for the learning process of the volunteers during the EVS project.

We have seven partner-institutions in Lisbon which could be the probable place for YOUR EVS experience: ALBA - Brazilian Portuguese Association of Ayurveda and Associated Disciplines, APAV - Portuguese Association for Victim Support, BUÉ FIXE - Associação de Jóvens, LAR Jorbalán, LIGA Foundation, NHC (Social) - Cooperative of Solidarity, RAÍZES - Children and Young People Supporting Association.

About Lisbon
Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal, with a population of 564.657 inhabitants within its administrative limits on a land area of 84.8 km2. The urban area of Lisbon extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of 3 million on an area of 958 km2, it is the 9th most populous urban area in the European Union. About 2,831,000 people (which represents approximately 27% of the population of the country) live in the Lisbon Metropolitan. Lisbon is the westernmost largest city located in Europe, as well as its westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. It lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River. Lisbon has two sites listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site: Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. Furthermore, in 1994, Lisbon was the European Capital of Culture and in 1998 organized an Expo '98 (1998 Lisbon World Exposition).
There are three major public universities in Lisbon: the University of Lisbon (Lisbon's oldest university in operation, founded in 1911, also called the Classic University of Lisbon), the Technical University of Lisbon (founded in 1930) and the New University of Lisbon (founded in 1973), providing degrees in all academic disciplines. There is also one state-run university institute – the ISCTE - Lisbon University Institute, and a polytechnic institute – the Polytechnical Institute of Lisbon.
Major private institutions of higher education include the Portuguese Catholic University, as well as, Lusíada University, Universidade Lusófona, and Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, among others.
The total number of enrolled students in higher education in Lisbon was, for the 2007–2008 school year, of 125.867 students, of whom 81.507 in the Lisbon's public institutions.
The Lisbon region is the wealthiest region in Portugal and it is well above the European Union's GDP per capita average – it produces 45% of the Portuguese GDP. Lisbon's economy is based primarily on the tertiary sector. Most of the headquarters of multinationals operating in Portugal are concentrated in the Grande Lisboa Sub region, especially in the Oeiras municipality. The Lisbon Metropolitan Area is heavily industrialized, especially the south bank of the Tagus river (Rio Tejo).
The country's chief seaport, featuring one of the largest and most sophisticated regional markets on the Iberian Peninsula, Lisbon and its heavily populated surroundings are also developing as an important financial center and a dynamic technological hub.
Lisbon has the largest and most developed mass media sector of Portugal, and is home to several related companies ranging from leading television networks and radio stations to major newspapers. The main industries consist of oil refineries, textile mills, shipyards, steel and fishing.

The European Voluntary Service - EVS - repesents the action II of the Programme Erasmus+ of the Programm Erasmus+ (Youth), executed by the European Comission. This service offers you the possibility to fullfill a work as a volunteer with a duration of 12 months in a country which is not your homecountry. EVS stimulates a real service of learning.

What is the objective of the EVS?
The EVS has the objective to carry out the solidarity e to promote tolerance between you and other young people, to stregthen the unity of the European Union. In this context, the solidarity between the citizens of the European Union could be achieved through the support for the participation in different forms of nonprofit und unpaid activitie, as a chance for the citizens in general of a diferent country than the country of your origin.
These activities are characterized by a number of nonfromal learning, with the objective of improving and/or acquiring personal , educational, professional and social competences

What is an EVS project?
The European Voluntary Service offers young people the opportunity to travel and to be as a volunteer in a foreign country, so he/she gets to know other cultures, people and languages. It is a service that promotes a european solidarity and is a service of learning, because the young people acquire new personal and professional competences and at the same time contribute to the local community with their work.
A EVS project consits of three phases:
- planning and preparation;
- implementation of the Activity;
- evaluation (including a reflexion about a possible furtherance)

What kind of projets exist?
The projects are part of many different areas: Culture, Youth, Communication and Image, Sports, Social Service, Cultureal Heritage, Arts, Civil Protection, Environment, Cooperation for Development, between other areas.

How to choose a project?
A The choice for a project is your responsibility. You can find all possible institutions which can host volunteers of the EVS on the website of the European Commisson or at our EVS vacancies.
At the moment, Check-IN is partner and coordinating organization of five receiving organizations in Lisbon in the process of the European Voluntary Service. For more informations, scroll to the end of this page.

What is the duration of the projects?
The duration of the projects vary between 2 and 12 months:
- Short term: 2 weeks up to 2 months
- Long term: 2 months up to 12 months

How to participate?
Young people aged between 18 and 30 with residence in the country of the sending organization. The volunteers are selected independent from their origin or context. Volunteers with less oportunities can participate from 16 years on. A volunteer can only participate in one EVS activity. Exception: the volunteers who participatesd in an EVS activity with a duration of less than 2 months can participate in one more EVS activity as long as the total duration of both periods is not longer than 12 months.

Who organizes?
The EVS volunteers have the right and the obligation to participate in the sessions of education and avaliation. The responsibility of the organization of the Cycle of Education and Evaluation of the EVS depends of the place where the events are organized.
One Activity of the EVS consits of three essencial parts:
- The Service, in which you are received by a promoter in a country that is not your country of residence and where you develop a voluntary service for the benefitof the local community;
- An Education, in which the promoters involved in the EVS Activity have to ensure that you participate in pre-departure training, the on-arrival training, the mid-term training and the final evaluation of your activity;
- Permanent Assistence, the promoters have to offer personal assistence, related to your work, as well as language and administrative support during your involvement in the Activity.

What are the advantages?
You will get to know better another culture and another country, you will learn a new language, get to know other volunteers, you will make new friendships, get a better aptitude, helping others you will feel more needed and, for sure, you have the possibility to enjoy!
The EVS is also accepted by the European Commission who will give you a certificate about your participation in the end of your activity.

The European Vouluntary Service is NOT...
- ocational volunteering, without structure and in part-time;
- an internship in a company;
- a compensated job; it cannot substitute compensated jobs;
- a recreational or touristic activity;
- a language course;
- exploitation of cheap labor;
- a period of study or professional education out of your country

The rights of the volunteer are:
In relation to the travel dispenses, the sending organization (Check-IN) ensures the dispenses between your palce of residence and the place of the project (go and return) and the use of public transports in economy class. This is your right and our duty.

Local Transports
We ensure the existence of public transportation for your mobility.

Accomodation and food
In relation to your accomodation, this is as well offered to you as your daily meals through a salary that you have to administrate during the voluntery project (this salary for food also covers holiday times).

Doing your EVS, you are ensured via the Group Ensurance of the Commission that is part of all projects of the Programme Erasmus+ and completes the covering of the national systems and the social ensurance - if nessecary. The Coordinating Organization, in this case Check-IN, is in cooperation with the Sending and Receiving Organizations responsable for your inscription which has to be done before leaving your country. So during your project as a volunteer you will have an ensurane that is completely free for you and can be very helpful in case of any medical problems.

Personal Assistance and Mentor
The Personal Assistance constists in giving you the oportunity to integrate you into the local community, to get to know other young people, to get to know the place and participates in activities in your free time. The Mentor helps you in the process of local intigration, has the responsability to provide you assistance and accompany you during your project. It should be someone that you can contact if your have doubts about the ongoing of the activities and if probably occures a problem.

Linguistic Support
Or the Sending or the Coordinating Organization have to offer this support, they have to organize a language course for your to learn the language of the country of your project.

You have the right to receive a pocketmoney that you are flexible in buying necessary things at the place of your project. It will be offered to your or weekly or monthlyTerás ainda o direito de ter um dinheiro de bolso para te orientares no que for necessário no local do teu projecto. Será te distribuído de forma semanal ou mensal, conforme o projeto. O valor do dinheiro de bolso é consoante o país da EU.

Duties of the volunteers
Pre-Departure Training
The Pre Departure Training gives you the oportunitie to talk about your expectations, to develop your motivation and, at the same time, acquire more informations about your receiving country and even about the programme Erasmus +. It can also be an oportunity for you to get to know and speek with ex- EVS volunteers. The duration of this training is, normally, about three days.

Cycle of Training and Evaluation of the EVS?
The promoters involved in the Activity of the EVS have to ensure, that you participate in:
- Pre Departure Training
- Inserted Meetings
- On Arrival Training

- Inserted Meetings
(obrigatory only for Services with a duration longer than 6 months)
The Inserted Meetings give the volunteers the oportunity to evaluate their experiences until that moment, and can also get to know other volunteers involved in other projects in other places in the receiving country. The duration is about two and a half days.
- On Arrival Training
The On Arrival Training takes place after arriving at the receiving country. This training presents the country and the environment to the volunteers end helps them to get to know one another. The duration is about seven days.

How can you apply for an EVS project?
The application has to be presented at Check-IN Association and the international partner, inside the period of accreditation corresponding to the starting date of the project.
To perform your application, you have to elaborate/ update your Europass CV and a motivation letter and send both to Enable JavaScript to view protected content.. The Sending Organization (SO), Check-IN, will support you in the elaboration of the applications, informs you about the needed elements of each project and, if necessary, supports you with the elaboration of your CV Europass and your motivation letter.
Volunteer, it is you who choses your project, your destination, but it is important that you are properly informed about what is the European Voluntary Service and you have to know if this is really the project you would like to do.

ALBA - Brazilian Portuguese Association of Ayurveda and Associated Disciplines is a non-profit association based in Lisbon, founded in 2001. The ALBA Association inherited the work of the Ayurvedic Association of Brazil which, since 1990, disclosed Ayurveda and its systems in Portugal, including Yoga and its diverse modalities. Ayurveda was implemented from north to south of Portugal. The ALBA Association takes part in various international events like conferences or as a guest to offer seminars and workshops. Through these activities many partnerships with national and international institutions has been developed.
Since its beginning, the association organized 1.933 courses, 2.890 workshops and has 1.756 students.
In 2010, ALBA founded Veda – International Institute of Vedic and Oriental Studies with the goal of spread even more the oriental and occidental systems of body work, especially of Ayurvedic medicine and Yoga, as this is the main field of education, treatment and rendering of services.
The Association offers services in the area of body therapies, which includes basic and advanced training in various forms, from the area of Ayurvedic Massage (Traditional Ayurvedic Massage, Indian Head Massage) to the area of Western Massage (Reflexology, Swedish Massage, Manual Lymphatic Drainage) and also Holistic Studies (Reiki, Crystal and Meditation, Astrology) and Yoga (Yoga Instructors - Technical Level).
The aim is to promote Vedic philosophy and oriental culture. In addition to the training activities, there are regularly classes of Hatha Yoga and Pilates.

The volunteers will be integrated in different activities of the daily routine of the Association:
- ALBA Events: the volunteers will support the team organizing the seminars and workshops (logistic support, create a graphic design for the projects, promote projects through social networks and make documentary activities);
- Therapies: The volunteers will support the team to organizing therapies of exercise, yoga and meditation it is intended that the volunteers increase their autonomy as therapists;
- Information Spot: to support the staff in welcoming the clients, to give specific information and material about the space, the seminars and the daily program and answering the clients requests;
- International Relationship: to support the team to create new international partnership, plans of Intervention with the partners, promote between the members these opportunities,..;
- Communication: to support the team to prepare of contents for website and facebook; Database compiling; Development of a plan for Communication and Marketing of the ALBA:
- Personal project: With the support of ALBA and Check-In Association, all volunteers will develop their own project.
The work of ALBA Association is very diversified to such an extent so as to enable a large variety of activities and opportunities for different individuals with various interests and abilities. In this way, there would not be required any specific knowledge or qualification to be a volunteer in ALBA Association.

The APAV - Portuguese Association for Victim Support is a private charitable organization, recognized by law with statutory objective to inform, protect and support citizens who have been victims of crime. It is a non-profit organization, which supports victims of crime, in a personal, sensitive and professional way, through the provision of free and confidential services.
Founded on 25 June 1990, it has offices nationwide, with headquarters in Lisbon.
To succeed in its mission, APAV aims:
- To promote the protection and support available to victims of crime in particular those victims with fewer economic resources;
- To achieve this by means of information spread, personalized counseling and guidance, and all kinds of assistance: moral, social, legal, psychological and economic;
- To liaise with all relevant entities and stakeholders the police, social security agencies, health centers, local authorities, autonomous regions, and any other private or public bodies dealing with crime and victims of crime;
- To foster and promote social solidarity, particularly through the creation of networks of volunteer collaborators and social sponsors, as well as through victim-offender mediation and other practices for restorative justice;
- To assist and sponsor research into the problems victims face, so that their interests can be satisfied in a more adequate manner;
- To promote and participate in programs and projects which raise public awareness of crime and the victims of crime;
- To contribute to the adoption of laws, regulations and administrative measures which increase the protection and support available to victim of crime, with a view to reducing the risk of victim-hood and its effects;
- To liaise with international organizations, and work closely with similar bodies in other countries.

The volunteer will develop different activities:
- Cultural or victim themes related events: The volunteers will help the staff organizing different events (they will contact artists, organize the space, give technical support, promotion and making a visual recording of event;..);
- Workshops: support the staff, planning different workshops and seminars (logistic support, promote projects through social networks and make documentary activities;..);
- Information Center: To support and help the staff in receiving and welcoming people, to give specific material and, make a contact with them and the professional. The volunteer can help to organize the space, to organize the information material;
- International relationship: support the staff, planning different international projects (logistic support, promotion and support during all process of the project...), Identification and networking with possible partner organizations (engagement in future projects, mutual learning of practices; Translation of contents...);
- Fundraising Center: support in the events (seminars, conferences, fundraising activities) taking place during the internship, and sharing of knowledge and practical experience in fundraising strategies and activities and search for possible funding streamlines (for example, foundations worldwide).
- Communication: to support the team to prepare of contents for the English version / the version of the maternal language of the volunteer of the APAV website; Database compiling;
Activities developed within the International Relations Unit, Project Management and Development, which usually involve:
- Assist current researches and projects related with our mission: support victims of crime (when these researches are taking place);
- Administrative support: as search for contacts inside organizations; definition of profile of organizations (e. g, justice system, victim support, private companies) with key persons to get in touch in order to contact and establish future partnerships and share of knowledge, etc.
- Personal project: With the support of APAV and Check-In Association (Coordinator Receiving Organization) the volunteer will develop his own project (according to the interests of the volunteer, the objective of APAV and the project’s area, planning, fundraising, coordinating finance construction and evaluation.

The LIGA Foundation enacted on March 2nd of 2004 by a group of personalities from the various sectors of the Portuguese society, LIGA Foundation emerged as the result of the progress of its founding associations, LPDM Centro de Recursos Sociais (1994) and Liga Portuguesa dos Deficientes Motores (1954). Under the core moral and ethical values of the foundational culture of five decades, it inherits the concept of Person and considers the concept of Qualification a key one.
By recognizing the singularity of each person and her unique value, it opens up a new cycle renewing the speech patterns and practices according to the concept of the “Human Features” as a unique experience in constant evolution. This development occurs through the environmental and temporal relations with which it interacts and promotes opportunities of acknowledgment and maximizing of each person’s potential, so that each can live her citizenship in plain dignity and responsibility.
Currently, the LIGA Foundation covers more than 600 daily clients in the services it provides, between 0 and 100 years old, with and without impaired functionality (disability). We respond to the needs and interests of each client through programs/ services in the areas of Early Childhood Intervention, Health and (Re-) Empowerment, Vocational Training and Employability, Accessibility, Independent Living, Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. The main groups of interest of our work: People with disabilities and incapacities; Elderly people of the community.
LIGA Foundation recognizes the integrity of the person as a unique and unrepeatable human being, with the identity that distinguishes the physical, psychological and social dimension.
The Foundation Participates in the advancing of the knowledge frontiers in the area of Human Functioning Sciences, and Design and Society, in a responsible and shared leadership, producing and transmitting ideas and results that could contribute to the development of a participatory social culture, resulting to the improvement of ethical patterns and human fulfillment.
Mission / Objectives
- Mobilize specialized resources to help people, contributing to the recognition of the human diversity. LIGA Foundation aspires to develop high-quality skills that target the specific needs of the Person that are essential for the accomplishment of its Fundamental Rights.
- Assure the civil guardianship of dependent People beyond the lifetime of those who they depend on and whenever their Families request it.

For this partnership of EVS, LIGA Foundation offers opportunities for involvement and integration of the volunteers in the following areas:
1. cultural activities, tourism and leisure with seniors (people +65):
In this area, the volunteers will have an active participation in the organization and promotion of cultural and socio-recreational activities with the senior public in appreciation of free time and the promotion of personal and social development of older people.
2. Occupational Activities with young people and adults with impaired functionality:
In this area volunteers will participate in the dynamics of Occupational Activity Center of the LIGA Foundation, aimed at people older than 16 years with impaired functionality, engaging in various areas of promotion of personal and social skills, promoting citizenship and quality of life of the customers. The Occupational Activity Center includes the following areas: therapeutic intervention, occupational activities, arts, sports, culture ...
3. Activities and events of the House of Arts, which promotes the cultural and artistic opportunities to stimulate and develop the creative potential of every person, at any age and physical functional status, psychological or social, in strengthening their self-esteem and their social recognition, particularly in the field of Dance, Plastic Arts, Painting and Ceramics.
In this area, volunteers will give their contribution in planning and realizing events and activities promoted by the House of Arts of the LIGA Foundation.

NHC Social - Cooperative of Solidarity is a cooperative of solidarity, with statute of IPSS, was formed on July 13, 1999.
The cooperative is engaged, through cooperation and mutual support of its members, in obedience to the Cooperative Principles, satisfaction, nonprofit social needs of citizens through the provision of goods and provision of services, particularly in the following areas:
a) Support for vulnerable groups, especially children and young people, people with disabilities and the elderly people;
b) Support for families and socially disadvantaged communities with a view to improving their quality of life and socio-economic insertion;
c) Development of support programs directed to target groups, particularly in disease state, age, disability and severe economic hardship;
d) Promoting access to education, training and professional integration of socially disadvantaged groups;
e) Solving housing problems, in particular by promoting and managing sheltered housing for the elderly and other vulnerable strata of the population;
f) Promotion of recreational, cultural and sports initiatives.
In addition to the social intervention with the generality of the weakest citizens, NHC (Social) pays special attention to children, young and old people. Some, by first concern with their education/ training and employment with a view to their autonomy and independence; others, by their fragility and risks that occur at the end of its existence.
For all residents of the social neighborhoods we serve, we favor the close contact and the answers to their needs by creating appropriate services, such as crèches and kindergardens; the construction of cultural, sports and recreational equipment; home-based support; establishing partnerships with other institutions in search of aid to meet the desires and needs of the population we serve.
It operates mainly in two major operational areas:
- Social housing - holding 212 houses in the districts of Leiria, Nisa, Odivelas and Salvaterra de Magos for social rent;
- Childhood - having a crèche for children in Loures and Lisbon and a day care center in Lisbon. At the same time develops social actions to support families with few opportunities, distributing products for personal and household hygiene, social and financial area.
The SVE project will be happens in crèche "José Mateus" in Olivais Norte neighborhood, in Lisbon. The crèche has 42 children distributed as follows: nursery for 10 children from 3 months to 1 year old, room for children 1 to 2 years and room for children 2 to 3 years.

The work that the possible volunteers could do, when they come to NHC (Social) is exclusively connected to the functions and work of the educators and workers in the Crèche. Every volunteer will be integrated in these teams, helping the programmed activities of the daily routine in the crèche - always in supervision by the official worker / educator.
The volunteers are always integrated into a team and will be part of different tasks during hos time at the Crèche:
- Educational: To support the team to organize the educational activities, the relationship with parents, hygiene, care and feeding of children, to support the creation of conditions for the smooth running of the crèche, the materials and the equipment.
- Management: To help the team with planning and creation of the educational activities this also includes the management of the day-to-day

Raízes - Children and Young People Supporting Organization is a Portuguese non-profit organization that supports the social inclusion of children and young people at risk and living in poor neighborhoods in Lisbon, Portugal. We exist since 2004 and have reached thousands of children and Young people with our inclusion activities. In 2015, we run 4 local youth and community projects engaging around 800 children and young people living in deprived areas and with several risk factors (dropped school; poor parenting support; low social skills; aggressiveness; substance misuse,...). In our children and youth projects we organise a wide range of activities, such as, study support; individual sessions for careers guidance, arts workshops (music, drama, with recyclable materials, etc); sports events, small trainings in specific subjects; educational trips; parents’ support and guidance and community events.
Each project has its own work team who are daily in the community and working alongside with the young people, their families and the local. We also do a lot of outreach work in surrounding areas. We work closely with schools, local authorities, training centres and other local organizations in order to intervene in an holistic way and make a wider impact on the lives of the children, young people and the local community. Raizes develops innovative approaches to non-formal education, such as education through multimedia, music and sports engaging young people who are hard to reach. We work with young people to develop their personal, social and academic skills as well as guiding and empowering them in choosing their professional path and raising their personal aspirations.
We are authorized to deliver accredited professional training for young people and adults. We do Training for Trainers, IT training, Personal Development Training for Adults, Short courses to Work with Children and to Work with Seniors.
We are mainly funded by different government bodies, but also by our associates, donors and private sponsorships.

There are four main projects / areas, in which the volunteers could be integrated:
1. Claquete – The project's central idea is the creation of a youth producer of audiovisual content aimed at developing, together with children and youth, short films, documentaries, music videos, news articles and other multimedia products as a pedagogical tool in the direction of promoting social inclusion for art. This is to an innovative way to contribute to the school inclusion, promoting employability and training of young people.
For this project, it will be important that the volunteer would like to develop skills in image-editing.
2. Passaporte – The project is innovative promise for enlargement of sociability prospects and opportunities for social inclusion of young people in Ameixoeira, blaming a youth group project for exchanges and exchanges of national and international nature experiences with audiences from different socio-economic contexts, cultural and different backgrounds, fostering youth mobility. High interest in divers musical areas and in working with sound/radio would be helpful for working in this project.
3. Loja Mira Jovem – An identity has been created for the project and is developing to be the type of activity that traditionally has very good results in accompanying young people: the Sport. So the project through this promotion tool of personal and social skills, seeks to foster academic success and employability, linking the commitment these achievements to the sport and competition. For the volunteer would it be good to have a divers interest in sport.
4. Sede – In this field of work, the volunteer would work mainly in the general daily process of Raizes-AAJC: Founding of international partnerships is one of the main topics of the work. For this project, a high interest in organization/marketing and a will to do use and develop English skills are important.
